The Mull Mod is the
highlight of Mull's cultural activities. Every September choirs and
individuals from all over the Isles and mainland come to Tobermory
to compete in the second biggest Mod to be held in Scotland. A Mod
is a Scottish festival of singing, music, dancing and poetry. As the
well organised Mull Mod draws a lot of competition, it is staged
about two weeks before the National Mod. It has Gaelic testing and
is judged by excellent adjudicators and means that all competitors
have a good chance to sort out any mistakes in their performances
before the National event. Staged at the Aros Hall and other venues
around Tobermory, competitors enjoy this event because of the warm
welcome and appreciation that they receive.
Mull's Fiddler's
Rally is also staged during September and is another greatly enjoyed
music festival when fiddlers from all over Scotland and the rest of
the UK congregate for an evening at the Aros Hall for massed and
individual fiddle music.
Fèis Mhuile the
Mull Fèis (Festival) takes place in mid February and is incredibly
enjoyable annual event.
The Mendelssohn on
Mull Festival in July, provides an opportunity to enjoy up to ten
days of music on the island much admired by Mendelssohn himself
whilst visiting in 1829.
The Mull Music Festival occurs
during April and takes place largely in Mull's public houses spread
around the island. Musicians and groups from all over Scotland come
to Mull with their instruments to join in ad hoc sessions.
