. Planning
Your Route to
Mull
.
…
You’ll really enjoy a journey to Mull. From a coach by a
lochside or a train on a mountain you’ll get unforgettable
views of the wonderful west highland scenery …. and
then you’ll have a marvellous sail on sheltered waters
between islands. For many journeys you’ll have a choice of
attractive routes and the notes with our tables may help you
choose between them.
Direct Routes by Public Transport:
You can
reach Mull easily from outside of
Scotland
via
Edinburgh or Glasgow (for timetables from there
see pp 8 & 9), but the journey from
Glasgow is
quicker and easier. An easy access bus links all the train
and bus stations in
Glasgow
every 10 mins for much of the day (max journey 8 mins: 0870
608 2 608). If travelling by train via
Edinburgh
change there for
Glasgow
Queen Street. From elsewhere in Scotland consider
coming via
Stirling
or
Perth
(both summer)(p 8),
Glasgow
(pp 8-9) or
Fort
William
(pp 18-19). Alternative routes by the
Clyde &
Argyll
Islands
are on pp 20-21. There’s a list of touring routes on p 6.
Most routes
meet for the ferry at Oban (p 9) where you have a short
walk left round the harbour. If you require overnight
accommodation there the Tourist Information Centre can help
(01631 563122). Foot passengers should be on board the boat
10 mins before departure. You’ll disembark on Mull at
Craignure – local transport radiates from there (see our
central pages). There’s a summary of services from Glasgow
on the back cover.
Bringing
Your Own Car, Motorbike, Bicycle …. or Private Plane (!)
Most road
users prefer the Oban to Craignure ferry (p 9) for journeys
from the south, and Lochaline to Fishnish (p 10) from the
north. Kilchoan to Tobermory (p 10) is an option from Skye.
From the south take the M9 to junction 10 or the M8 to the
Erskine Bridge and follow the signs for Crianlarich and Oban.
Car drivers are best to reserve space for the Oban-Craignure
ferry tel 08705 650000 and should be available 30 minutes
before departure. For information on accommodation and
parking in Oban tel 01631 563122. Cyclists can bring their
bikes by train (reservation is essential to Oban and certain
other places: 08457 550033 www.scotrail.co.uk/cycle.htm).
The airfield is at Glenforsa 01680 300402 (on the bus route
between Fishnish & Salen p 11). Sample distances are on p 3;
car and bike hire on p 22. Our timetables may help you plan
your route, judge your times, and note scenes to watch for.
