what3words

No need to explain where I am this time, but here I am again with this three word address again. I am quite serious about making Mull the first what3word island. The surgery here in Tobermory already has tried to get this started, but it needs a plan. My plan is to teach the Scouts and Guides how to use it and then get them to be the trainers. I visited the Lifeboat station this morning and they hadn’t heard of it, and perhaps neither have the fire brigade. We know some of ur first responders have, but that also needs co-ordination. I believe if we get this system in place this year, lives may be saved and visitors find their way to some of our more hidden treasures.

Tobermory this morning, but note the word address on the image. We are quite serious about making Mull the first what3word island. This is an accurate to within three meter address system, which is very user friendly on a smart phone. You don’t need data to use it, although to share a location on Social networks you will. The Geocaching website already has the option and the www.Tobermory.co.uk soon will.

The Isle of Mull websites are currently working on making a common navigation system that will work for both our emergency response teams, and visitors.  GPS is great, but it is clumsy to operate and most people don’t know where it is on their smarphone or computer.   Grid References are equally so and, you really need a proper map.  Google maps are even better, but you need a data signal to load the maps.  So, what is the solution?

what3words is an application that will run on any computer and smartphone.  If you have a data signal, then you can ‘share’ images with a baliscate standing stonelocation on them, or, just use it to navigate.  The next bit is almost unbelievable, but quit logical.  The what3words company has divided the entire planet into three meter squares.  Each three meter square has three words attached to it permanently.  The three words are divided by dots, so the three words of   octagon.prickly.store    when clicked will take you to the standing stones at Baliscate.  The other option is to click on the image and the same thing will happen.  If you are in Tobermory and type or copy the three words into the app, it will give you a route to get there.  If there is no road, the the compass will guide you to the location.

If you have an accident and want to decribe exactly where tyou are, you click on the app and share the three words with a friend or, a first responder.  They don’t need to have the app, as all they have to do is click on the link that has been sent.

This is one very clever app and it can be download free from any app store if you are on a phone or tablet.

It may lead you to a hidden cave, or archaeological
